Today marks an important benchmark in American history, because for the first time, a half-White person will be the leader of the Free World. This will undoubtedly usher in an era of change in the areas of the environment, peace, social justice, and democracy.Environmentally, we will see a change in global warming policy. Instead of sitting idly while global warming irreparably damages our planet, we plan to do what is politically convenient by cutting back our greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050 through a cap-and-trade system instead of a carbon tax. We will also see a change in our energy policy. Instead of running our economy on dirty fuels such as oil and coal, we plan to expand vastly other dirty energy sources such as nuclear, biofuels, and “clean” coal, and in the short-run, we will also change our policy that banned offshore drilling.
In regards to peace, we will see a change in both our foreign and domestic policy. We will change our military campaign from Iraq to Afghanistan, not ruling out invading other countries in the region with our wasteful, bloated military budget. We will allow countries like India to engage in a nuclear weapons program without forcing them to sign on to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, which basically tells nonnuclear countries that it is ok to start producing nuclear weapons for their self-defense too. Domestically, we will see continued support for legal homicide, criminalizing the poor, police brutality, and the continued failure of the War on Drugs.
Even more conspicuous is the amount of change we will see in terms of social justice. Our healthcare system will be transformed into one that continues to favor private health insurance companies with huge overhead costs, leaving millions without insurance. The government will change the way they spy on Americans from an illegal practice to a legal one thanks to the provisions of FISA. We will change the way our civil liberties have been compromised by continuing the Constitution-shredding USA PATRIOT Act, Secret Evidence Act, and Military Commissions Act. We will eliminate poverty by failing to increase the real minimum wage to a living wage, leaving millions below the poverty line. We will change the level of education Americans receive by not providing free preschool through junior college public education. We will change the way we trade with other countries by implementing more free trade agreements that do not value workers’ rights. Lastly, we will change the distribution of wealth in our country by implementing the corporate socialism that Congress started with the $750 billion bailout of Wall Street.
Lastly, and arguably most importantly, we will see significant change in the democracy of our great nation. We will see the continuation of democracy-weakening practices such as winner-take-all voting, the Electoral College, restrictive ballot access, and corporate control of presidential debates and political “dialogue” in our country. This will further institutionalize our change-wielding two-party duopoly and marginalize all other perspectives.
Truly, this is an election like no other in our nation’s history and the amount of change we are about to witness is evident. This could not have happened without YOUR help, so thank you for making the best country on the planet that much better. God bless America!
